A fantastic walk, especially for children. Includes 2 playgrounds, a fairy tree, a park, a beach and an ice-cream stop!

Description

1. Start at the corner of Bridport and Montague Streets.

2. Facing west, the Albert Park Library is on your left, as is the Albert Park Hotel - a great seafood bar!

3. Heading west you'll see cafes, restaurants and boutiques either side of Bridport Street.

4. Just east of the corner of Bridport, Merton Streets and Victoria Avenue you'll see the Avenue Bookstore - definitely worth a leisurely browse.

5. On your right you'll see the Albert Park Primary School - a great playground which is open to all on weekends.

6. If you keep heading west towards the beach and just over Richardson Street, you'll see more cafes and restaurants. Then there's Jock's, famous for its ice-cream - worth a visit either on your way to or from the beach.

7. When you come out of Jock's with ice-cream in hand, cross Victoria Avenue and turn right into Barrett Street. On your right, on the corner of Barrett and Withers Streets you'll see the Fairy Tree. A delight at any time but lit with fairy lights (of course!) at night around Christmas.

8. Cross Withers St and walk another block until you come to Foote Street and the Gasworks Park - a favourite with dogs and humans alike!. There you can sit in the shade while you finish your ice-cream or explore. There are artists studios, a theatre and a café. And on the third Saturday of the month there is a Farmers' Market (8.30am - 1.00pm). Remember to bring your green bags. In the park you'll also come across various wonderful sculptures and installations.

9. Head out of the park, turn right into Foote St and continue west towards the beach. You can take a detour through the new Albert Park Secondary College and if you happen to have a basketball with you, shoot a few hoops.

10. At the end of Foote St you'll reach Beaconsfield Parade and South Melbourne Beach.

11. Turning right you'll see Station Pier, an easy walk away.

12. Cross Beaconsfield Parade, head onto the beach, take your shoes and socks off and go for a paddle. Turning left you'll come across the Plum Garland Playground another favourite with our kids - and if you keep walking another couple of hundred metres you'll come to the Kerferd Road Pier. There'll you find another café and often, hopeful and sometimes successful fisher-people.

13. Walk back to Victoria Ave and either walk back up Victoria Ave stopping to get fish and chips, have a drink or coffee and cake or hop on the #1 tram into town.
