Summary

A short walk along the Maribyrnong from Brimbank Park to where the Western Ring Road crosses the River

Description

Find out more

Starts at Car Park C in Brimbank Park, and so links to the Brimbank Park Walk. A flat walk along the left bank of the river as far as the EJ Whitten Bridge, though you can continue further down river if you like. On some maps e.g. Melway p14, there is a river crossing shown slightly after the start - this is a ford at best, not a bridge, and can probably only be used safely if the river is very low (it connects with a circular walk along a short stretch of the right bank). Continue down river to the ring road crossing - and then return to the car park

Points of Interest

1. Park Map

Useful maps and descriptions of Brimbank Park

2. View across river to Kealba

Rowan Drive housing surmounts the ridge, reducing the illusion of remoteness.

3. Playground

Most of the walk consists of a wide path between trees. This is the only open section.

4. Crossing usually not possible

While shown on the Melway as a bridge it is in fact just rapids, with potential to cross only at the driest times if then. Otherwise you can get to the path on the other bank only from Rowan Dr.

5. Rapids

Another set of rapids as the Maribyrnong twists its way towards Hobsons Bay.

6. E J Whitten Bridge

I think it is a rather magnificent sight from below as it soars over the Maribyrnong.
